Empowering young people to be healthy

Empowering young people to be healthy

Sexuality and sexual health is a big issue for young people – but is something that young people, and youth workers, don’t always feel comfortable talking about. Young people who were committed to promoting responsibility amongst young people and who were in opposition to campaigns based on fear worked with Casal de Joves to create La Recerca del Plaer (The Pursuit of Pleasure).

“La Recerca del Plaer” was developed through a participatory process involving youth centres in Catalonia and over 100 young people from different clubs. As part of this process there have been surveys, workshops, assembly and editing a video where young people talk about how they live and understand their sexuality.

La Recerca dl Plaer is an exhibition designed to help workers and young people talk about sexuality and sexual health in a more open and relaxed way. It consists of thirteen 85 x 200 cm panels on the following topics:

· Introduction

· What we mean by sexuality?

· Own body self-awareness

· G-spot and erogenous zones

· Virginity and romantic conception of love

· Gender

· Normal or abnormal? (identity, sexual orientation and trends)

· Abortion

· Orgasm

· Prevention

· Communication between sexual partners

· Myths and practical dictionary

· Photo of sexuality

In addition to the panels there is a 30 minute Informative video, where twenty young people talk about how they live and how they understand their sexuality. There is a Preventative Suitcase containing a compilation of samples of different contraceptive methods available and preventive resources and guides and a Red Suitcase  that includes a compilation of sex toys, erotic objects, literature to discover, experience, touch and play.

There is also a Support Guidebook that accompanies the exhibition with content on the topics covered in panels, to encourage dynamic sessions, how to work with the video, and bibliography.
