Reflecting on practice and working to improve

“Sexism is present in our youth clubs” was a thought that brought together a group of workers from youth clubs who are members of Casal de Joves. This group came together to form Degenerades in order to discuss how to change sexism in the youth clubs – the conclusion was that training was needed for youth workers and volunteers.

Degenerades met once a month to decide what needed to be included in the training and turn the idea into a reality. This included trainings for training across the Federation, an awareness campaign for youth clubs, a gender newsletter, promotional announcements and demonstrations.

Casal de Joves did not want to limit this work to their own Federation, but rather to expand to other educational institutions so they created Jornades de Lleaure i Sexisme (Sexism and Leisure Seminar). The Seminar is a meeting place for different kinds of non-formal learning associations or organisations, the feminist movement and the LGBTQ community. It is a space that was born from the need for organisations to consider the question of sexism.

The aim is to find the common ground between the different organisations in order for:

  • Educational associations (children’s centres, youth clubs and youth groups) to include in their work the task of transmitting the gender perspective and
  • For feminist and LGBT organisations to be able to transmit their perspective to the agents who are working daily with children and young people.

The third edition of the Sexism and Leisure seminar took place in January 2013.

The impact of the gender work in youth clubs and, in particular, the annual Sexism and Leisure Seminar has been changes amongst young people from the youth clubs.

Some of these changes are:

- Increasing interest displayed in youth clubs to work on this issue.

- Increasing empowerment of women within the structures of their associations.

- Changes in the use of language, seeking the inclusion of boys and girls in the expressions we are using, and the documents we produce.

- Joint work with feminist organisations and LGBT organizing the “Sexism and Leisure Seminar”.

- Increasing number of participants at the seminar.
